Gowan Company Supports Gowan Science Academy

Founded in Yuma over 50 years ago by Jon and Liney Jessen, Gowan Company is a locally owned family business that develops, markets, and sells agricultural inputs—such as seed, fertilizer, and crop protection products—worldwide.

Their success depends on a strong STEM workforce, including biologists, agronomists, chemists, accountants, and engineers. Recognizing a shortage of local STEM-trained professionals, Gowan Company partnered with Crane Elementary School District to create Yuma County’s first STEM-focused school.

Gowan Science Academy opened in 2013, fully integrating STEM into a standards-driven, inquiry-based curriculum that emphasizes collaboration, critical thinking, and real-world problem solving. Students investigate authentic challenges, design solutions, and communicate their ideas—building both academic skills and community connections.

In just over a decade, our students’ growth, enthusiasm, and impact have exceeded all expectations—helping prepare the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

APS STEM Focus School

In 2017, Gowan Science Academy was selected as one of five APS STEM Schools for the Future. This professional development program equips educators with hands-on STEM learning opportunities, fosters community partnerships, and inspires challenge-based learning projects.

Through this program, our partnership with the Yuma Community Food Bank has empowered students to tackle real community needs through innovative solutions.
